Cristina Sampaio has worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the press since 1986, collaborating with newspapers such as Público and Expresso, in Portugal, The New York Times and The Boston Globe, in the USA, Courrier International and Alternatives Economiques, in France and Kleine Zeitung, in Austria. Since 2009 she creates short political animations for television. Her work has been published in several cartoon books. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions of illustration and cartoon in Portugal and abroad, notably in Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. She has presented her work in various solo retrospectives (2001, 2018, 2019, 2024, 2025). She has received numerous awards, most notably the Stuart Prize for Press Cartoon in the best cartoon category (2006 and 2010), the 1st prize in the editorial cartoon category at the World Press Cartoon (2007), where she also received several honourable mentions (2009, 2015, 2021 and 2022), the 2nd prize at Libex, Italy (2022), an honourable mention from World Press Freedom Canada (2023) and the Career Award at the Guimarães Illustration Biennial (2025).Read more
