Guido De Maria, humorist, media man, author and television director was born in 1932 in Lama Mocogno in the Modena Apennines. At university, he began to devote himself to humorous cartooning in Italian and foreign weeklies. In the 1960s he directed Caroselli ad spots, including “Salomone, the pirate pacioccone” for Amarena Fabbri and the “Brutos” and “Franco e Ciccio” ads for Cera Gray. In 1972 he invented comics for TV creating, with Bonvi, the detective Nick Carter, protagonist of RAI “Gulp!” and “SuperGulp!” of which, until 1981, he remained the director and co-author with Giancarlo Governi. Again for “SuperGulp!” he created Giumbolo, a comic pear-shaped character, who breaks into the scene, singing a demented song written by Guido and Franco Godi. In the ’90s, together with Beppe Cottafavi, De Maria edited “Comix”, the weekly comics magazine published by Franco Cosimo Panini. With over 1200 shorts to his name, he continues to produce and direct for Diaviva, dividing his time between Reggio Emilia and Milan, and among his charges are the Loacker elves. He directed the show “Favolopera” for the Amarcord Group, which debuted in 2015 at the Teatro San Carlo in Milan as part of Expo 2015. He has received several awards including, in 1978, the “Premio Nazionale Regia Televisiva” in the Children’s category and, in 2015, the “Premio Tenco” for arts and culture activity. Eclectic, unpredictable and still committed to making people smile, Guido De Maria has always dedicated himself to entertaining the public and, in fact, says his job is definitely “a laughing matter”.Read more
