Istvan Kelemen was born on June 26, 1957 in Baja, Hungary where he lives and works. He graduated from the University of Arts and Crafts in 1989, in animation film and video. In addition to an absolutely personal and innovative graphic style, Istvan Kelemen proves to possess unbridled imagination and creativity, which allow him to create funny and amusing images. His illustrations are thickly filled, not just by the characters and from the settings, but also from objects and animals that enhance the comic and irreverent effect. From the stylistic point of view Kelemen seems to approach the particular linearism and formal purity adopted by Saul Steinberg, and therefore by Giovannino Guareschi in the humorous cartoons created for the “Bertoldo”. His extraordinary graphic and compositional mastery is evident in his works, from which engaging, surreal and surprising images arise, built on a fragmentation of the illustration in the myriad of objects and characters that almost completely occupy the frame.Read more
