Giovannino Guareschi (1908 - 1968) was born in Fontanelle di Roccabianca, in the Lower Parma area, on 1 May 1908. From the age of 18 onwards he has always dealt with journalism and, as a subsidiary activity, he was a poster designer, set designer, the charger, the tutor, the census officer, the draftsman in a laboratory for the pasteurization of milk, the porter in a sugar factory. Sometimes he too has been a university law student, but it seems that, for now, he has no intention of graduating. He is married and really has the two children he so often talks about in his stories about him. He has published, up to now, eleven volumes: La scoperta di Milano, Il destino si chiama Clotilde, Il marito in collegio, Italia provvisoria, La favola di Natale, Lo zibaldino, Corrierino delle famiglie, Diario clandestino, Il compagno Don Camillo. He was editor in chief of a provincial newspaper, then editor-in-chief of the weekly «Bertoldo», then editor of «Candido». Small world is precisely a choice of the stories published, under the same title, in the weekly "Candido", and in the large note that precedes the collection, the reader will find everything that can be used to set and, in a certain sense, justify the stories themselves. Guareschi is one and seventy meters tall, he writes exclusively by machine and sleeps on his left side.Read more
